When I read this article I have to conclude that there’s still no consensus about the impact of fracking on the environment.
First of all, there are some benefits:
- Let us begin by the carbon emissions: scale gas is much more cleaner than oil and coals, so there’s less impact
- Furthermore, it supports the local economy by creating jobs.
- And with the latest technologies we can now access reserves that weren’t profitable anymore
Of course, that’s just the “Good News” story, there is a clear impact on the direct environment, and the big question is of course if it can be tapped safely? It looks like there will always be some environmental damage, especially in the direct environment.
So does the environmental damage outweigh the benefits? I’m still not sure but I think we don’t need to compare it with oil and coal, but we need to take the renewable energy sources in the comparison.
